As I was searching online for DIY ideas for L's room, I found this bird mobile pattern from Spool and totally fell in love with it. It took me maybe a total of two hours to make, not including the walk I took with Thor to find the sticks. The mobile hangs right over L's crib and he loves looking at it. I am so happy with how it turned out!

An Update

So... it has been about four months since I last wrote a post on this blog. SO much has happened since then! Over the months I have sat down to write and haven't really known where to start so I haven't written anything. Hopefully the posts will be on a more regular basis from now on.

Here's a quick photo recap of the past four months... enjoy!

Lukas was born at 5:03pm on Sunday October 2, 2011. My labor was pretty easy and the actual delivery went fast. It was about 12 hours from when my water broke at home till I was holding him in my arms. I keep thinking back to that day and am so thankful that everything went so well and we have a happy and healthy baby boy. We couldn't be happier.

So tired! Getting dressed and ready to come home from the hospital. It was so wonderful to have all Luk's grandparents there to celebrate his birth. He is so loved.

So we have this tradition with our friends every year. We get together, have some spiced cider and carve jack-o-lanterns each Halloween. We have a contest to see who's is the best but there is never a prize... just pride. You can see Luk's first little pumpkin on the top step. A classic design for his first Halloween.

One month old!

My parents always took photos of us on the first day of school and I've decided to keep that tradition alive. Here is Luk ready for his first day of school. I would of course rather stay home with him, but that isn't in the cards right now. I know he is in good hands while I'm at school each day. The best part of my day is when I pick him up and he's all smiles when I walk in the door :-)

Best friends :-) Thor is never too far away from Luk and is always bringing him bones and balls to play with. Thor will be SO excited when Luk can actually play with him someday!

It's true what everyone says. They do grow so fast!

We are getting very excited (and nervous!) and can't wait to see who he looks like and to hold him in our arms.

Mobile for Baby S.

We are trying very hard to spend a ton of cash getting ready for Baby S., and I knew I wanted to make a mobile for his room. So when I stumbled upon this the other day, I knew it would be perfect for his room! I've made some of the birds already with some scraps of fabric and Spool's super easy pattern. I'll post some photos when it's all done. I can't wait to see it hanging in his room!

Our little boy is well on his way of understanding the importance of being a Red Sox fan. He already has Sox books, onesies, and the coolest little hat. We wanted to expose him to the wonders of Fenway as soon as possible, so we went to a game a few weeks ago and are going to another one in a few more weeks. There aren't too many things that beat watching the Sox win at Fenway.

Since we live so very close to the Pemigewasset River, we spend a good number of days in the summer swimming and floating on the river. It's peaceful, quiet, beautiful, and such a perfect way to spend a sunny, summer day.

Baby S.

I can't believe that we only have about 9 more weeks until Baby S. makes his arrival! When you say it like that, it seems like such a short amount of time!! Before I was pregnant, I never really understood why people talked in "weeks" instead of months. I never thought I would be one to do that, but now I get it. Each week is such a change in growth that it's much easier to understand how the baby is developing week by week, rather than month by month.

My mom and sister hosted such a nice shower for me a few weeks ago. It was actually really overwhelming to have so many people there from all aspects of my life... childhood, high school, college, now... it was awesome. Everyone was SO incredibly generous and I know Baby S. is loved already.

We decided to keep the baby's room green and are not doing a "theme". We're going to use some great fabric from IKEA for the curtains, some DIY artwork, and passed down things from when J and I were kids. We put the crib together the other day and love it! I really think the drawer underneath will be so useful in keeping sheets and such in. Handy when changing wet sheets in the middle of the night!

We still have a lot to do. I'd love to have the room basically set before school starts, but not sure if that's going to happen. We'll see!

It has been well over a year since I last posted on my blog.
I'm not exactly sure why it's been so long. There were many days where I came to write something and then decided not to, for whatever reason.

But, I'm back... and hoping posts will happen on a more regular basis.

Some things I've seen through my blue eyes since last year...

Summer 2010

We went to Europe for an absolutely amazing honeymoon. I don't even know the words to use to describe the time we had there. Three weeks traveling through Italy, Switerzerland, and France. Oh, how I wish we were back there eating fresh and delicious food and drinking wine!

Thor came to live with us. We picked him up when he was 8 weeks old and we instantly fell in love. He's grown a lot since last summer... 85lbs now! He makes us smile every day.

And the BIGGEST news is that we're expecting! A little baby boy will join us in October and we couldn't be more excited (and a little nervous) to be parents!

Grampa West

It has been a tough week.

Saying goodbye to Grampa so suddenly has been hard.

He loved cookies and gardening, mowing the lawn and fixing the house he built. He was generous and loving, and full of stories that always made us laugh. He and Grammie were married for 64 years and were best friends and soul mates.

I miss you, Grampa.

I know you will have the best garden Heaven has ever seen... and you won't have to worry about the deer eating the plants.

Maine Party

It is becoming a tradition for my Aunt and Uncle to have a winter party at their farm in Maine. Due to the lack of snow this year we couldn't do our usual snowshoe hike, so we played broom ball instead. It was a blast!

The igloo of last year was going to be hard to beat, especially in the hot sun and the sinking ice.

But... then men decided to go for it anyway. We could hear the ice cracking as they built it!

Garden on the Deck

Despite the snow predicted for this week (which I'm soooo excited for!) I've been thinking about spring and gardens and what to do on our back deck this summer. Since we live in a condo we do not have the luxury of having a garden in the yard so we need to utilize our deck better than we did last summer.

Jay wants to try again to grow tomatoes... he gets a few every summer but not the bounty he wants. We grew peppers last year, too, but did not get as many as we hoped for. We tried to grow cucumbers in a TopsyTurvy but had zero success.

One problem = we will be away for about three weeks from mid-June till the beginning of July. What to do with our plants? Wait till we get home or hope they survive with some friends watering them?

Here are a few ideas I've seen that I'm pondering for this summer. I really want to use the blank wall on our deck that separates our deck from the one next door.

Hanging Succulents...how cool are these? And they don't need a ton of water!

For the Birds

We've decided to feed the birds this winter and have seen lots of them come to our back deck to eat... Chickadees, Downy woodpeckers, Bluejays, Cardinals and lots of others that we can't identify.

Let's talk about the cardinals... we have two males and one female that visit the feeder. One is obese. He sits there eating for 15 minutes at a time. Seriously, that long. He just sits and eats and you can see from this photo that he is BIG compared to the average weight one in the 2nd photo.

One night I just wanted to get the Christmas tree out of the house. Not knowing where to put it at 10pm, Jay just threw it out on the back deck. It sat there for a few days and then I decided to actually use it for a few months instead of just bringing it to the transfer station. I took some left over bagels, covered them with peanut butter and bird seed and hung them on the tree along with some chunks of suit. It looks pretty good... and the birds love it!

Here are just a few photos of some of the details from our wedding. I hope Caty got some good takes of these details as well!

15 foot fireplace that we had the ceremony in front of.

Center pieces from my Uncle Peter. He took three birch logs, drilled some holes for flowers, and then placed them on a piece of maple (I think it's maple). So perfect, so simple.

Uncle Peter came through again with our cupcake stand... made from birch pieces and plywood it held our delicious cupcakes perfectly. Jay and I covered the plywood with waterproof maps of the White Mountains using spray adhesive.

Ta-da!

It was important for us to include our family in our day. Both Jay and I have parents and grandparents who have been married forever... as the picture says... they are our inspiration.

When thinking about what to do for a "guest book" at our wedding I knew it had to be something different than just a name in a book. I wanted our "guest book" to be creative and to have it somehow incorporate something personal from each guest. When searching the incredible amount of bridal and wedding blogs out there... I found this posting with these examples.

Immediately, I knew, we would do this at our wedding. So perfect in so many ways.

I did some googling and found a tree form I liked and began to draw. I used a large piece of water color paper and a thin, black Sharpie. I did some cross hatching for texture and even "carved" a J + K in the tree trunk. We used Color Box ink from Michael's in fall colors.

My mom took this photo as we were setting things up before the ceremony. Our wedding tree came our better than imagined and looks so fabulous with all of our family and friends' finger prints! It's being framed as I write this so I'll post a final photo soon!

Ben was a handsome, black lab.

He was full of love and very loyal.

Ben loved to take walks and swim.

He was always by your side.

Ben was my Aunt's dog and when she would travel,

Jay and I would take care of him.

Unfortunately, Ben had been having a lot of trouble with his spine in the last year.

He was in a lot of pain and at times could not even walk.

Ben is now in a better place, and I know he is

pain free up there in doggie heaven.

Nevada Falls

After lunch in the sun at the top of Vernal Falls, a few of us decided to keep going up to Nevada Falls. Maybe it's the sound, the mist, or the power of the water, but waterfalls amaze me.

Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls are part of the Merced River, the main river that runs through Yosemite Valley.

We saw two mule trains on their way back from the high Sierras. They bring supplies to the camps there and take out the trash. The camps in the high Sierras are much like the AT huts here in NH and the White Mountains.

The trail up to and down from Nevada Falls was a loop trail, so on our way down we turned and saw this amazing view of the falls.

Fishing with Dad

Many summer mornings were spent fishing with my Dad when I was little. He taught me so much on those early mornings, not only about fishing, but also about life in general. He always let me reel in the fish, even if it was on his pole. There were many mornings when we didn't catch anything, but it was always fun. At home we were usually met with questions of "how many?" "how big?" We would dock and then go inside for pancakes or Yum Yum Shop goodies.

Yesterday, after a few years of not going with him, I went fishing with my Dad. He got one bass, but it jumped off before it got to the boat. We saw loons, talked about my upcoming wedding, and remembered some of our good times fishing in the past... like the time I caught my first rainbow trout while wearing my grandmother's plaid polyester pants!

I love my Dad.

Our Solar System

I am taking an online class right now through the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. It's about the solar system, which is not my strong suit. I pretty much know nothing about the solar system, but am learning quickly!

Some interesting facts so far:

1 million Earths could fit inside the sun.

Mars has the largest volcano in the universe, called Olympus Mons.

Neptune is 3.5 billion miles from the sun and it's orbit takes 165 Earth years to complete.

One assignment we had was to make a scale model of the solar system using our neighborhood as the background. It was actually fun to make and really brought home the relationship in size between the planets and their distances from the sun and each other. Crazy stuff out there in space!

On a side note- just found out I am graduating grad school in May. Yipee!

My dear Grampa passed away yesterday. He loved the lake and building model boats. He always checked his word searches to make sure he did them right... and would make a smiley face on it when it was correct. He called my Nanny "Babe" even into their mid-80s. He had bright blue eyes.

Thanks to my Philosophy, Ethics, & Education class in grad school a few winters ago, I became entranced with snowshoeing. We had weekly meetings at my professor's house where his wife made cinnamon rolls and we talked about our views of education. Afterwards, we would snowshoe around and talk some more. I thank my professor for giving me another way to enjoy winter.

My dear friend posted a picture of her morning commute today, her Every Day. It reminded me of some early morning pictures I took over the course of a week on my way to school in December. She lives near DC and meets quite the traffic jam at times. I head east over the Kancamagus Highway through the White Mountain National Forest. I pass four, maybe five cars during the 45 minutes it takes me to get over the Kanc... quite a contrast to Misty Leigh's commute.

There are days I wish I lived near a big city. The grocery store would be closer than 30 minutes, I could easily stop at a store and buy some earrings, or possibly browse the books at Border's. But the fresh air, morning snow, and the sunrise over the Whites are all worth it. Have I ever told you how much I love living in the mountains?
